Attracting great talent for your company - Part 1

February 17, 2008 14:16 by Justin King

Wanted At SSW we are always looking for great candidates to come work for us. I've been thinking of ways to market and attract said talent other than the standard old seek.com.au method of putting up a wanted ad. The last company I worked at would just offer a referral bonus. I never thought that was a good option but most likely suited the call centre market as friends at University would try and get friends a job, but if a friend was looking for a job and you had a position going you would mention it without a referral bonus anyway.

Today I stumbled across Xobni (I've put a link up top left corner of this page). This product is a social networking tool for your Inbox and whilst checking out their blog (every company should have a blog to drive product releases) I noticed a great video they created to attact talent.

If you then take a look at their job page you'll notice a few interesting things:

  1. They show their offices so you can see what type of environment you are going to spend half your day in
  2. They give you multiple monitors and your own desk
  3. They promote dinners/events with team members
  4. Location, Location, Location
  5. Free drinks :D

Just from this quick look you can instantly think this is a company I would like to go an work for.

Here is a job ad for a C# developer in Brisbane I found by searching for C# developer jobs. It was the first one on the list so must be the best job going!!!

So lets analyze this job ad and see if it would be enough to sway you to go work for them

  1. Great career move - Hmmm this point sounds fantastic but what would exactly be great about it?
  2. Good Renumeration -  Fantastic sounds great, but a ballpark would be great before I waste an effort going for the job
  3. Brisbane CBD based - No problems here, some companies don't even tell you which suburb the job is located in which in this day an age when you spend hours in traffic you always go for the closest one
  4. Seeking motivated individaul - Nice the recruitement company cannot spell at all.  I mean next time ask for a depressed lazy person! What does this actually offer as a job ad
  5. 100 staff, 2 in IT department - Oh dear looks like the IT department is going to be majorly under resourced
  6. Looking for mid level developer - Read "We don't want to pay much" which looks like point 2 just got shot out of the water
  7. Understaning of SQL scripting and code - Maybe an understanding of how to spell would be good too

So what I really got out of this ad was that it's in Brisbane and they are after a C# developer but for an unknown amount of money with a little focus on IT as they are a law firm. Nope not interested.

I'll continue this on with Part 2 in a couple of days.
